Ideally, each sport should have its own area and specifically designed surface, but with economic pressures and space restrictions we have realised the need for a multi use system. Nearly all multi sport areas are made of a non-natural material due to the increased usage; this allows us to manipulate the performance of each surface designed. The number of activities played on any one surface should be kept to a minimum wherever possible as performance parameters vary from sport to sport. When designing a facility it is essential that we consider the levels of competition and proposed usage; what sports are to be played, to what standards, and how often will the facility be used. Good ball bounce is key in tennis for instance whereas, a ball bouncing too high in football may be detrimental to the game. As a rough guide for synthetics, a short pile carpet is more suitable for tennis, a medium pile for hockey and a long pile for football. The design process may seem like a compromise in terms of playability and safety but there are many surfaces we install that provide the user with a more than satisfactory solution. |
